When I attended my first Safer Sex Night last year, I went, I danced, I left after ten minutes, and I decided I would not go again. So this year, when I found out that Safer Sex Night fell on a Thursday, my usual shift, I was a little bummed out that I would again have to be surrounded by sweaty naked people and (literally) steaming walls. However, that feeling was short lived, because I soon realized that this Safer Sex Night would be a bit different than it was for me last year—after all, what better night for some solid and entertaining people watching? Since I began working at the Sco last semester, I have rediscovered my love of people watching—especially drunk, horny, dancing college kids people watching. That may sound a little weird, but hey, you try it and get back to me and then we’ll see how weird it is… But I digress. Yes, I worked Safer Sex Night this year, and let me tell you, it’s pretty different being on the other side of the bar at this classic Oberlin event. Overall, I was surprised at how much fun I had being there as more of a watcher than a doer. Continue reading

Three years after my first Safer Sex Night I attended my last one to find that not only has my bra-size changed but so has my concept of what it means to have a good time. Continue reading

Sometimes when I’m walking home alone after a party, shindig, soiree, or some other social gathering for which all participants consumed indeterminate amounts of alcohol I murmur that Jenny Owen Youngs tune, “What The Fuck Was I Thinking?” I find that I’ve been doing it appallingly often recently. Safer Sex Night was no exception.

A sour stench hovered in the heavy air and I looked down to only see skin—so much skin. I found myself caught in a whirlwind of sweaty bodies, glaring lights, and catchy music. I glanced to my right to see a guy ripping off his nipple tape letting out a deep and painful sounding scream. To my left was a thick sea of scantily clad grinders, dancing much more obscenely than they would at the usual splitchers. I searched for the appropriate words with which to label the scene. “Ridiculous,” “hilarious,” and “liberating” crossed my mind. I looked down and realized that I was less naked than most. A friend came up to me and said, “Elana, you are so clothed right now.” Disappointed in myself? Yes. But I have an explanation. Continue reading

On December 5, the Oberlin HIV Peer Testers in association with the Sexual Information Center (SIC) and Safer Sex Week hosted a workshop on HIV education. The workshop was led by Oberlin HIV Peer Testers Annie Nigra ’14 and Mollie Nisen ’14. I commend these two wonderful peer testers for leading a workshop that was informative, educational, sex positive, and open-minded. Continue reading

I recently attended the workshop Alcohol & Consent, which is just one of the fabulous workshops happening this week on campus for Safer Sex Week. All the workshops promote sex positivity. Consent is a crucial element of sex positivity, which promotes having a positive outlook on safe sex. Continue reading

On December 4, the Sexual Information Center hosted a BDSM 101 workshop as part of this year’s Safer Sex Week. Led by three SIC staffers, the one and a half hour talk covered topics in the BDSM acronym: bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. Continue reading

It was 6:50 on a Monday night, and I had been sitting on the steps of Wilder Porch smoking (against the rules ‘cause I’m a badass woman) while pensively looking out into the darkness of Wilder Bowl. It had been a long Monday and I wasn’t exactly thrilled to go to the Kinky Krafts Safer Sex Workshop. I had been slightly disappointed with the last few workshops I attended because, while I usually leave with knowledge that I previously did not have, I also leave with a lot more questions. Kinky Krafts was different. Continue reading

In the absolute minefield of entertaining, sex-positive workshops being offered during this year’s Safer Sex Week, the Oberlin SIC has managed to offer some interesting, informative and stimulating (pun intended) dialogues regarding sex and sexual health. I attended one such workshop last night entitled “What’s Sex Got to Do With It? Keeping Reproductive Justice Sexy.” Continue reading
