Oberlin College Democrats Update: Election May 7

With the May 7th primary right around the corner, the main focus for the OC Dems right now is voter education. We want to get the word out about this election to as many people as possible and make sure that everyone knows about the issues that will be on the ballot. With these goals in mind, this week we invited Amber Fisher to our regular meeting to tells us more about Issue 1: a tax levy that would raise money for the Murray Ridge Center. If the issue passes, Lorain County will continue to levy an already existing property tax, which will provide more than half of the funds for Murray Ridge.

The Marriage Between Shale and Sustainability is a Fake

Oberlin Anti-Frack, along with some other students from Pennsylvania, staged a mock wedding today, April 15, at the EQT Plaza in downtown Pittsburgh to condemn the misguided union of corporations and environmental nonprofits through the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD). Oil and gas companies, such as Shell, Chevron, and CONSOL Energy, and environmental nonprofits, such as the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC), and Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP), began working together in March of 2013 in order to create a set of voluntary regulations for hydraulic fracturing or “fracking.” The demonstrators have asked all environmental nonprofits to divorce themselves from CSSD due to irreconcilable differences.

Oberlin College Dems Update – Nickie Antonio

This week, OC Dems welcomed Ohio State Representative Nickie Antonio to give a talk on her experience as the only openly queer person to ever serve in the Ohio state government. She spoke enthusiastically about the progressive work she is doing in the House of Representatives, specifically when it comes to advocating for reproductive rights and equality for the queer community. Antonio also discussed the many setbacks she has faced as a Democrat in a Republican-controlled House. Overall she seemed optimistic about the work she has been doing in the Ohio state government.

The presidential election may be long over, but the OC Democrats are still as busy as ever. We are working on several projects right now, including partnering with an organization working towards legalizing same-sex marriage in Ohio. Additionally, we have already started getting ready for the election in May.

This week we elected new representatives for seven positions for the spring semester.

Oberlin Votes to Invest in Local Community with Student Activity Fee

Oberlin, OH–Today, Oberlin College took an important step towards connecting money and morality by investing in the local community. The Board of Trustees just approved the Oberlin College and Community Investment Plan, a resolution to invest part of the Student Activity Fund every year in certificates of deposit (CDs) with the Ohio Educational Credit Union (OHECU). According to Ron Watts, Oberlin’s Vice President for Finance, a few hundred thousand dollars a year will go into this fund reserved for large capital purchases by student organizations, such as a new radio tower for WOBC or new computers for the Review. OC Dems Update: “I Am a Woman and a Homosexual and Barack Obama Loves Me”

We all saw the campus-wide party that happened in Tappan Square post-reelection, but what about the people behind the scenes? After all of the hard work and countless hours spent organizing and campaigning here are some of the Oberlin College Democrats on how they are feeling post-election:

“Exhausted! But very grateful for all of our volunteers and very proud of all of the work that we all put into this.”

The OC Democrats’ election efforts have been going well. In the last few months we registered 1,868 voters, surpassing our numbers last year by a wide margin (956 voters last year). This huge turnout speaks to the enthusiasm on campus about this election. Continue reading

OC Dems Update, Week of 9.17
