Groundhog Day: An Unexpected Journey

By: Kyla Van Buren and Sybil Levine

Welcome to Punxsutawney

The start of school is exciting and all, but there’s nothing like a great end to winter break. On the way back to Oberlin, the two of us (Kyla and Sybil) went on an adventure to celebrate Groundhog Day and have one last hurrah before putting our noses to the grind. While February 2 may have come and gone, the two of us are still reliving the celebration in our head. If you had been there with us, you would feel this way too. Let us explain.
Neither of us are from anywhere near Punxsutawney, PA, nor were we previously familiar with the purpose of this little town: Groundhog Day celebration central. One of our friends had been a number of times and was always extremely enthusiastic when he told us, “You should come to Groundhog Day!” Thinking back, he never said much more about it than that.  Yet somehow he managed to get us pumped up for this mysterious holiday and before we knew it, we were driving to Smalltown, USA, with groundhogs on every street corner.

Little A swinging his tail at Mr. B. Two frisky squirrels from different clans, could this be forbidden love in the making? Do brown squirrels carry the recessive gene? Only time will tell.

Without white fur Mr. B is hard to see.

Spotted: Practicing her strut down a concrete runway, Coco is seen stumbling while trying to perfect her “walk”. With her white hair gleaning and pout fully in tow, she looks like she almost has it down. But where is her bestie, Fluff? I think someone is upset that D&G hired C instead of F to be their closing model this year at Paris Fashion Week. Look out C, we all know how F hates getting outshined, especially by her beautiful best friend. Hopefully she won’t slip up. Until next time.

Look at that strut!

Spotted: On this rainy day in Oberlin, Coco came down from the top of the tree as I took the compost out to the back of the yard. Perhaps my bread crusts caught her eye, or it could have been the bits of onion and kale. She swished her tail around and around as she peered at me from on high. By the time I turned once more before entering my house, she had vanished into the dripping leaves. Til next time, C.

Do you see that evil eye??

Spotted: Leaping from tree to tree, Pleasant Street’s one and only Coco was seen stuffing acorn after acorn into her tiny, pout lipped mouth. Do I see stress eating? What’s going on with you C? Did Fluff stand you up at the last soiree? That would’ve been embarrassing. After noticing me, she started chirping her war cry. Thankfully, I was able to snap a pic before I fled for fear of my life. She truly is a beautiful nightmare. You know you love me.

Spotted: White tuft of fluff sporting beady, devil eyes sprinted across my feet in Tappan square at 8:53 am this morning. Looking determined yet flighty, I tried to stop it for a brief question about his daily life, the new cleanse I’m doing, and his favorite trend this season, but to no avail. It leaped up the tree and into the leaves bounding toward the heavens. Until next time fair albino squirrel, your image (and fashion sense) will stay in my forebrain.

SPOTTED: Like jolly old St. Nicsquirrelas, one albino squirrel ran atop the rooves of North Pleasant St. With all eyes on it, the squirrel leapt from rooftop to tree branch, the sight of which left onlookers wishing it had wings like its cousin, the flying squirrel.

SPOTTED: Jumping from branch to branch to, one albino squirrel descends from its lofty spot to check out the newcomers in the nearby house. Looks like these people are here to stay and the squirrel begins to wonder if they’ll leave snacks. Stay tuned.

Memory: All Alone In the Moonlight

My memory of my orientation week is at once both blurry and bright. I remember the helter skelter of moving into my Baldwin dorm, saying goodbye to family, and showing up late to (or forgetting) the required orientation events.

Of all the chaos that is orientation, and disorientation, week, there is one moment in particular that has stuck with me. It was, of course, the first night after my parents left. One of my friends called and told me to meet her and another cool girl she had met outside my dorm.  My roommates were nowhere to be found and it felt pretty late, and as I walked out of the back door I found myself worrying, “should I tell someone what I’m going to do? Tell them that I’ll be back soon?” It was as if Jiminy Cricket whispered the answer into my ear: “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. You’re a little more free now.” The joy of the answer sent excited nervous bubbles all through my belly and I actually squealed like a little girl as I dashed out the door and met my best friends, the three of us all alone in the moonlight.
