Fearlessandloathing.com:
Fearless and Loathing is an independent student website for Oberlin College. F+L strives to cover events and issues at Oberlin that are relevant to the student body with the hopes that consistent news coverage and investigative journalism can help to make changes on campus.
You don’t need a degree to start participating in the world or to start changing it. There is a place on F+L for any student to share their thoughts, passions, and opinions through writing (columns/blogs) and other journalistic means (photography, video, audio, cartoons). We encourage you to take this freedom and run with it!
Our focus this year will be periodic investigative features on aspects of Oberlin pertinent to your college experience along with regular news on your student government. While our bloggers more or less have free reign, our reporters are dedicated to fact-based hard news coverage.
History:
David Clark ’12 and Erica Lee ’11 founded F+L in 2009 because they wanted Oberlin students to have an independent news source. By not chartering, F+L placed itself in a unique position at Oberlin. Independence allows us to report on Student Finance Committee and student government decisions from the only third party perspective on campus. Now somewhat outdated, the name was inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s “Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail of ’72” and is a play on Oberlin’s abandoned “Fearless” campaign which everybody loathed.
Getting Involved:
There is a place on F+L for any student to contribute in any medium. All students are welcome to submit a one-time blog post, photo or video.
For those of you who are interested in joining our staff, here’s what we’re looking for:
- Feature writers (write monthly investigative news features)
- Bloggers (write weekly, bimonthly or monthly on various topics of interest)
- Reporters (write either weekly or bimonthly on a news beat and maintain contacts)
- Columnists (write weekly or bimonthly on an overarching theme or idea)
- Photographers/Videographers (pair with a blogger or reporter to cover events or produce standalone photo-galleries and videos)
- Artists/Cartoonists
- Publicity Manager
- Business Manager
- Webmaster
Please send an email explaining your area of interest to editors@fearlessandloathing.com and a time that you are available to meet. Or stop by our office hours!

Hello, David. I note you are eschewing pizza for course work in 2012, and am sorry we didn’t make connections during the summer. If you are still interested in a free meal at Kendal, do let me know. I’d like to catch up with your doings.
I do like the new F&L format, and congratulate you on your’s and Erica’s remarkable accomplishment.
All the best to f&l and to you.
