The Black River Belles played sweet and sassy bluegrass to an overflowing Agave last night.  Beautiful vocal harmonies, Sara Sasaki’s unbelievable fiddle lines and Erin Lobb’s expert bass were punctuated by Helena Thompson’s undeniable stage presence.

Students Arrested in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh police arrested three Oberlin students on Thursday and Friday in conjunction with the G-20 protests.  The student arrested on Thursday refused to provide identification and is still being held.  Of the two students arrested last night, one was released this morning, while the other is currently being processed.

Update: The student who was being processed has been released.

The author of Drown, a collection of short stories, and The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao, a novel and winner of the Pulitzer prize, read selections from both of his books. Though the readings were entertaining, they served merely as a precursor for the extraordinary question and answer session that followed.

This Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the Little Theater, the Oberlin Theater Department will kick off its new semester with Edward Albee’s Tony Award-winning play from 2002, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia. The play is directed by Ben Ferber ’11 and features a four person cast: Moze Halperin ’11, Jenny Gaeng ’11, Jake Myers ’12 10 and Jeremiah Pearse ’11. They portray a family and close friend reeling from the discovery that Martin, the father, is having an affair with a goat, the eponymous Sylvia.

On Sunday, September 20th, Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series presented The Sphinx Chamber Orchestra and Harlem Quartet. Rarely do I hear such glee or see such joy in onstage, especially on every face of the twenty-plus musicians onstage during yesterday’s concert. Both groups simply exuded a sense of feeling privileged to be playing such great music.
